Art That Makes You Look Twice

Here is the process of painting a repeat by hand and later going in and cleaning it up digitally. First, I take my inspiration and begin to sketch out motifs. After that, I upload them to photoshop and play around with layout and color to get an idea of where I want everything. I then sketch by hand what the final motif designs will look like and trace each motif onto my large paper. After tracing my motifs I make sure that it has a seamless repeat in every direction. This then leads to the hand painting process. This one is painted using gouache. That ensures a flat painting job, making the photoshop part of it a little easier. One of the final steps is taking it into photoshop and cleaning up the colors and the repeat. After that, the design can go on forever and ever in any direction without any seam lines.

Screenprinted Butterfly Totes

Here I am creating a tote bag using an at-home screen printing technique. First, I started the design in Procreate and then brought it into Photoshop in order to get a cleaner image. Then using a Cricut machine I made a stencil that I weeded out and stuck onto a clean silkscreen. I used a mix of two-colored fabric inks to create a pink color and printed it on using no registration. I was able to make around five bags using this technique and have another design on the same screen that I can also print.

In this process, I hand carved a linocut block in order to create a positive image. I then used fabric ink to apply to the block and then stamp it onto a tote bag. I was able to send it through a press, ensuring the quality of the print would be the best it could be.
